Cost and margin

How to calculate landed cost for private label pet products

A low unit price is only useful when the full landed cost still leaves room for retail margin, freight, packaging, marketplace fees, and reorder growth

Use this guide before asking for a quote on compostable poop bags, bamboo wipes, puppy pads, or a mixed trial order

Start with the unit you actually sell

Dog poop bags may be quoted by roll, but your customer compares price per box, per refill pack, or per bag count, Pet wipes are often quoted by 100-count bag, while puppy pads may be quoted by pack size and absorbency version

Before comparing suppliers, make sure each quote uses the same product size, material, pack count, carton quantity, and packaging style

Small trial orders cost more per unit

A trial order is useful because it limits launch risk, but the supplier still handles sampling, specification checks, artwork review, carton planning, and export documents. That work spreads across fewer units

Larger repeat orders usually unlock better factory pricing because production planning, material purchasing, and packing work become more efficient

Packaging can change the whole calculation

A plain refill format, color bag, retail box, sticker label, display carton, and custom printed carton do not carry the same cost structure. Packaging also changes carton volume and freight efficiency

For a first order, keep packaging focused. A clean retail pack with a practical carton plan is better than an expensive design that makes the first shipment hard to price

Carton data matters as much as unit price

Ask for carton dimensions, gross weight, net weight, units per carton, and product photos before you compare landed cost. These details affect sea freight, air freight, warehouse receiving, and Amazon FBA planning

Heavy products such as pet wipes and puppy pads need special attention because freight can erase a cheap factory quote if the carton plan is weak

Leave room for the selling channel

Amazon sellers need room for referral fees, FBA fees, ads, returns, and discount periods, Retailers need wholesale margin and shelf risk, Grooming salons need practical repeat purchase pricing

BioPawPet uses factory-direct supply and sample-first quoting to help buyers compare cost before committing to a private-label run

Do not judge a quote only by the lowest unit price. Judge it by landed cost, retail margin, compliance support, and reorder reliability
